An FPV tour of a gym floor

Two of the region's fitness spaces, flown indoors. Heavy lifting, cardio and functional training areas connected in single unbroken moves, which is the only way to give somebody the feel of a room they have not walked into.

The brief

Sell the feel, not the kit

People join a gym because the room looked like somewhere they would be comfortable. That is atmosphere, and it needs movement.

Connect the areas

Free weights, cardio and functional training are usually shot as three separate photographs. One flight makes them one place.

Match the energy

A gym tour at walking pace sells a waiting room. FPV is the right tool because the speed is the point.

An empty gym looks closed.

What I filmed

Reception in

Starting where a member would start.

The free weights floor

Through the racks at speed.

Cardio and functional

Connected without a cut.

Members training

People using the place, which is what makes it look worth joining.

Height and space

Up into the roof space, which is how you show a big room is big.

The finish

Landing on whatever the gym is proudest of.

About this one

Yes, with prop guards and a planned route, and with the people in frame happy to be there. £5 million public liability cover.

A couple of quieter hours so the floor is usable but not empty, and classes at their busiest.

Most content sessions are a few hours on site. I plan the flight paths and the shot list beforehand so the time on site is spent filming rather than working out what to film.
